Eklutna Lake Alaska | Winter Family Session

Aside from the vast wildlife, Alaska is most known for its breathtaking views and vast landscapes. It’s one thing I love about being a photographer in Alaska, there is never a short supply of gorgeous scenery for outdoor photo sessions. I was thrilled to photograph this amazing family for their winter Family session at Eklutna Lake, where you’ll find the lake nestled at the bottom of picturesque mountain tops. 

The S Family reached out to me after discovering the exciting news that their two daughters were going to be traveling home from college for Christmas!  On top of that, they revealed that they hadn’t had professional family photos taken in years! I was happy to rectify this and provide them with a beautiful framed collage of their precious family moments. 

Eklutna Lake| Winter Family Session

In an effort to get the best lighting, we headed to Eklutna Lake just before sunrise. In case you aren’t familiar with winters here in Alaska, sunrise is about 11:00 am during this time of year! It was a frigid morning with the temperature barely at the 10-degree mark. That explains why we had the lake to ourselves! Needless to say, we worked quickly.

Despite the bitter cold, we made a stop at Reflection Lake, not far from Eklutna Lake. The sun was hidden, but the dense fog rolling off the frozen lake was mysterious and beautiful. From the photos, you can’t even tell how cold it was! The S family was all smiles. It was heartwarming to see this lovely family reunited, sharing laughs, and so full of joy.

It was an absolute pleasure working with the S family! I am so thankful for the opportunity to provide amazing families like them with memories and keepsakes that they will have for years, and hopefully generations to come. As families grow and life changes, such as kids flying the nest to college, it is even more essential to capture moments together.
