Tips for Fall Family Outfits

Fall in Alaska is rapidly approaching! Last year, our fall hit about mid-September, and this year the leaves are already changing! As many of you know, we typically have a very short fall season – and portrait sessions are very popular during this time too. So if you are looking at getting family portraits done with the beautiful fall covered mountains, be sure to contact the studio soon to check on availability! I can’t wait to see everyone for their fall family portraits. One of the questions I’m most often asked is “What should we wear?”, so I’ve come up with a few quick tips (and examples) for your fall family outfits this year!

Don’t Be Afraid of Color.

Fall is full of gorgeous colors: yellows, oranges, and reds. Don’t be afraid to pull some of those colors into your own outfits! Pops of red, yellow, and orange look great. Especially when other family members choose blues, greens or browns. Feel free to mix and match your family’s outfit and color choices. It provides more variety in your images and is an easy way to bring personalities into play! I know it’s tempting to put everyone in the same outfits for your session. But trust me when I say, coordinate – don’t match!

Use Layers!

It’s no secret that fall in Alaska can be chilly… so, use the layers we’re all wearing to your advantage! Layer a sweater over your favorite shirt or add some cute overalls for your little ones. Throw on your favorite scarf for a little extra warmth. No shame here! Jackets, scarves, and even hats can become super cute (and functional) accessories during your chillier session. Warm people are happy people… and happy people smile during family photos!

Wear something you can move in!

Our sessions will be outside during the fall, so we can capture those beautiful mountains. During our sessions, you’ll be moving and playing, possibly even on the ground. Wear an outfit that you love but that you can move in, too! The same goes for your children. Choose outfits you love on them – but that are also comfortable enough they can move around. I am all about cute but functional outfits. Their favorite sweaters, jeans, and jumpers can be great options this time of year! My favorite advice when choosing children’s outfits is to choose something that you love them in at this age.
